I've been illustrating mycological terms for the New York Mycological Society newsletter lately. "Deliquescence" was the first word. "Squamulose" is the next. It's educational for me (and hopefully for others) but I've also just been reeeeeealllly into illustrating mushrooms lately. Something about them goes so well with watercolors. I got into all of this first through photographing mushrooms in Seattle, Tokyo and now NYC. Thank you very much for visiting my website! I am a natural science illustrator and a recent graduate of the Certificate in Natural Science Illustration program at the University of Washington. My fascination with the natural world started when I was a kid, mucking around the neighborhood pond in suburban Detroit. Since then, I achieved a Bachelors of Science from the School of Natural Resources and Environment of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, with a concentration in Resource Ecology and Management. Subsequently, I spent many sweaty seasons in the field on environmental restoration and wildlife conservation projects in Hawai'i and Seattle, Washington. I am also interested in environmental education, sustainable livelihoods and environmental justice issues. My enchantment with nature informs my illustrations in acrylic, watercolor and ink. My work has been published by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, Rainforest Alliance, Central Park Conservancy and the Wildlife Conservation Society. I hope my illustrations will be of service in environmental education, natural science education and inspire the conservation of wildlife worldwide. I'll continue to work in the field towards wildlife and environmental conservation as well because outdoors in nature is my favorite workplace of all.

Wildlife Illustration

My first love is wildlife and I thoroughly enjoy illustrating animals that fascinate me. If I illustrate an animal unknown to me, through the research involved in illustration, I quickly fall in love with that animal, and it might become to me, my new favorite animal. Like the northern flying squirrel.

I've yet to see one, but they're AMAZING!

Having spent a lot of time outdoors for work and pleasure, my illustrations are drawn from observations, memory, and/or other references. I illustrate animals in their natural environments in acrylic, watercolor and pen/ink.

Botanical and Mycological Illustration

Having worked in environmental restoration for several seasons pulling weeds, reestablishing native plant communities, cultivating native plants in a nursery setting, as well as volunteering in organic farming, I love plants and mushrooms as well. Most recently, I took a mushroom identifying class with the Puget Sound Mycological Society and participated in a workshop on lichens at the North Cascades Institute. These experiences opened my eyes even wider to plant and fungal forms and how integral they are to the ecosystem, the survival of humankind and other wildlife, and the mysterious lives they lead.

I love illustrating plant and mushrooms as well. They're fairly ephemeral beings but they stay pretty still compared to animals :)

My illustrations are also used for environmental education materials. As an environmental educator and a visual learner myself, I appreciate the role of images and illustrations in conveying environmental concepts to an audience.

I illustrated coloring pages for the Rainforest Alliance's Education Program. These pages are part of their environmental education curriculum, downloadable for free from http://www.rainforest-alliance.org/programs/education/index.html.

Many thanks to everyone who came to my presentation "Birds: An Illustrator's View" during the On a Wing Family Festival yesterday, Saturday, April 5th in Central Park!! The weather turned out amazing despite a rainy forecast and I had a great time and hope you did to. I shared my artwork on birds and talked about how one can connect to nature through art, how to get started in illustrating birds and other wildlife, and the art making process. I posted pictures on my blog at www.annedrawsanimals.com. Thank you as well to those who couldn't make it but sent their good wishes! I hope to do this talk again, so if you have a forum for me to present a similar talk, please contact me at anne@anneyenillustration.com. Many kids showed up for this talk so I can modify it for either kids, adults or families of all ages.

ponds are so cool

Ponds have been a big influence on me and are a favorite setting of mine in my artwork. There was a pond near the house I grew up in, in suburban Detroit. As a kid, my summers were spent tromping around the pond, catching turtles and frogs. I am still exploring ponds now as an adult. One of my favorites is the Harlem Meer in Central Park.

because you can never have too many t-shirts

I've been silkscreening for about 15 years now and have probably silkscreened by hand over a hundred t-shirts. I love designing iconic silkscreen images for t-shirts and making silkscreens out of old pictureframes. Whenever I ran out of blank t-shirts, I would silkscreen the other side of the t-shirt. I don't do so much t-shirt silkscreening nowadays, but silkscreening has had a huge impact on how I design pictures. I like thick black outline, as if the image could be on a t-shirt or poster. Most of all I have a penchant for reproducible images so I draw and design with that in mind.

I used to draw comics and I self-published my own zine called Doochisuck many years ago. I did about 10 issues, then blogs took over the world and I stopped. Comics- a la Fantagraphics, Drawn and Quarterly, Wow Cool and other alternatives/independents- also had a big impact on my style. You may need to enlarge this image above to see the comic clearly.

I have been drawing animals for as long as I can remember. My summers as a kid growing up in suburban Detroit were spent mucking around in the neighborhood pond that was teeming with frogs, turtles and snakes when the weather got warm. The pond as my playground instilled in me a sense of wonder for all things wild and free. I cultivated this wonder and graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree from the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. Thereafter, I spent many hot and sweaty seasons in the field on wildlife conservation and environmental restoration projects, working with sea turtles, endangered birds and native plants. It is this work that took me out of the confines of that little neighborhood pond to the states of Hawai'i, Washington and New York.

All the while, I was also an artist, creating and selling self-published comic zines, hand silk-screened t-shirts and textile creations. Most recently, I ventured into natural science illustration, combining my love for art and science. As a recent graduate of the Natural Science Illustration certificate program at the University of Washington in Seattle, I create acrylic, watercolor and ink illustrations of wildlife and environmental themes. My work has been published by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, Rainforest Alliance, Central Park Conservancy, and has appeared in Wildlife Conservation magazine, a publication of the Wildlife Conservation Society. I am excited for the opportunities that lay ahead and grateful to all those who have given me a chance and helped me along the way.
